Healthy Gums for a Happy Smile

Healthy gums are an important part of your oral and overall wellbeing. Patients who have gum disease are likely to experience bleeding, red, tender gums, persistent bad breath, and other unpleasant side effects. If you are experiencing the symptoms of gum disease, do not hesitate to schedule an appointment with Dr. Fan. With gum disease being linked to an increasing number of serious overall health issues, it’s more important than ever to receive treatment. We invite patients from Austin and the surrounding areas of Buda, Manchaca, and Bluff Springs into our office for periodontal therapy.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

It’s important that you can recognize some of the most common warning signs of gum disease in South Austin:

  • Red or puffy gums
  • Gum recession
  • Bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
  • Gums that bleed after brushing and flossing
  • Sensitivity

Dr. Fan provides gum disease therapy at The Dental Centre. In the beginning stages, the condition may be reversed with improved hygiene at home and a couple extra visits to our office. After gum disease in Oak Hill progresses, however, scaling and root planing (also known as a deep cleaning) will be recommended for full healing of the infection.

Scaling & Root Planing

With this treatment, we will use special tools to reach below the gum line to remove bacteria that is causing infection, plaque, and other debris. After, we will smooth out your tooth roots to make it harder for plaque and bacteria to collect under your gums in the future. While this may sound uncomfortable, we will ensure that you’re numb and relaxed before beginning. We may even only clean certain segments of your mouth at a time for a shorter stint in our chair and more overall comfort. While this treatment alone isn’t enough to stop gum disease for the rest of your life, it’s the first step towards a healthy smile. Depending on how far your gum disease has progressed, you may need to receive scaling and root planing multiple times a year to ensure that your infection doesn’t persist.

Benefits of Scaling & Root Planing

The biggest benefit of scaling and root planing is that it can stop the progression of gum disease, as long as you maintain good oral health and come into our office for routine checkups and cleanings. This infection and inflammation of the gums can lead to permanent gum damage, bone damage, and even tooth loss. However, it can even increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, and more, which is why our scaling and root planing treatment is a vital step towards a healthy smile.

Additionally, besides cleaning away plaque and bacteria under your gumline, the root planing portion of this treatment makes it much harder for bacteria to collect in the future. This is especially important because once you get gum disease, you’ll be more susceptible to being affected by it again. That’s why this service is designed to treat early stages of gum disease while making it harder for it to progress in the future.
