Partial Dentures

A partial denture.

Partial dentures are designed to replace a handful of teeth at a time. This denture consists of a plate with one or several teeth attached to it. The replacement teeth themselves are made to look as natural as possible, while the rest of the denture is made from a metal base. A partial denture is held in place via hooks that connect to healthy neighboring teeth.

The teeth used in dentures (partial or full) are made from porcelain. This material is chosen because of its near-identical appearance to natural tooth enamel. The base they rest on may also utilize acrylic material, which is pink in order to better blend in with gum tissue.

Full Dentures

Full or complete dentures are designed to replace an entire arch. These are more suitable for those who are missing more teeth than what a partial denture can replace. They utilize a gum-colored base and porcelain teeth, much like a partial denture. However, full dentures are held in place by the gums as well as natural suction.

In the first several weeks of wear, you may use denture adhesive to help you get used to your new prosthetic. This can also prevent the denture from coming out while in use. After fabrication, Dr. Fan will provide helpful tips to make transitioning to your denture simple and straightforward.

Choosing the Right Denture

While it may be clear for some which denture is right for them, it may not be so obvious for others. That’s why it’s important to speak with Dr. Fan and get his professional recommendation before making a decision. Regardless of which denture you choose, it will be custom-made to fit your mouth exactly. This ensures you achieve the greatest level of comfort and most natural-looking appearance possible.

While your denture will need relinings every few years or so, they can last for many years before needing to be replaced. If you have questions about caring for your denture, feel free to contact our dentist in South Austin today!
